Indulging in some Breton

When I saw Breton on my last night at SxSW I was completely impressed and added them to my list of artist to watch.

So this morning I had a serious urge to listen to their music again. So I hopped on YouTube this morning and that feeling happiness I had at SxSW came rushing back to me. And I’ve replayed the song ‘Interference’ from their new CD ‘Other People’s Problems’, for at least an hour and nearly snapped at anyone who interrupted my time with this song.

On a sad note, I missed them when they played LA recently…..it still hurts!

Book: Losing My Brotherhood by Bobby Long

Just last week I wrote a blog about missing Bobby Long and now I feel like I’m being reconnected with him but on a deeper level. Late, last year Bobby announced he was writing a book…..a book a poetry. Now I personally thought his music was poetry in itself, so…..why write a book? But that’s just me.

But after reading the press release regarding the book, I gained a new respect for the artist.

The title stems from Long’s realization of what he left behind when he abruptly moved from London to New York to pursue his music career in 2010.  “I left my family and my friends, and I just went and didn’t really say good-bye to anyone,” he recalls.  “’Losing My Brotherhood’ refers to a specific group of three close friends who I lived with in London for four years and shared everything with, and who I don’t get a chance to see anymore. We were like brothers, but I know that time is now over.  It’s a tribute, really.”

If you regularly check Long’s site you would’ve found the excerpt he posted six months ago:

The Things I Did And Do

I dropped some cigarette ash on your neatly cut hair

I made your morning coffee slightly cold

I wept at films that you deemed too bold

and pretended I didn’t need subtitles.

These are the things I do to make you flinch

I played Bach at a higher speed on the record player

I pretended it was broken when you picked out Van Morrison

I sang harmonies to every line when you fixed it

and dragged my feet when you asked me to change sides.

This is what I do to annoy you

I poured Starbucks into your independent coffee store cup

I lied about my mother’s age and said I was adopted

I read you Pablo Neruda when you picked out Frost

and changed the words around and made them all about summer.

This is what I do to confuse you

I never let you help me with the morning crossword

I went on walks for hours and didn’t call

I drank myself into such rich stupors I couldn’t stand

and lied about the trivial shit.

This is what I do because I am a bastard

I watch you sleep and block the morning light out of your eyes

I cook your favorite meal three nights a week

even though I’m allergic

I listen to your friends talk about their friends

I stopped going to the bar.

Just because

Wow.

I’m not usually a poetry girl, unless its my own emo crap, but now I can’t wait to read Long’s new book! And his follow-up to A Winter Tale is due this Fall. I shall bask in the world of Bobby for a while.

Parlotones – Goodbyes

Tonight I’m going to see South African band the Parlltones at the Roxy. Since I was unfamiliar with their music I went to SoundCloud (my new favorite site!) and found I like their music. Someone described them as a darker version of the Killers…..Really? I dont get that vibe but so far I like them.

Listen: Parlotones – Goodbyes

Hope I’m able to get good video tonight!

Audio: Fun. & Hayley Williams – Somebody That I Used to Know (COVER)

I feel like I should call  today ‘Cover Wednesday’ but if I had talent I too would cover songs I wish I wrote so I understand. I saw a tweet from Fun. about their cover of Goyte’s ‘Somebody I Used to Know with Paramore’s Hayley Williams and I really liked it!! Yes its a song that’s been covered to death but I still like it. This recorded at BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge.

Enjoy!

Video: Sexy & I know it (Cover)

On the last ten minutes of the Heidi and Frank show (best webcast show on the internet!) they played a cover of LMAFO’s ‘Sexy and I know’ sung my YouTube sensation Noah and O-M-G I was fucking impressed! He reminds me of Marc Broussard and yes I’m now a fan! And if you’re an Ellen fan then you may have already seen him.

Enjoy!

damn almost better than the original!

PS:

And if you’re in the market for a great talk show check out the Heidi and Frank show on the Toadhop Network!

I miss Bobby Long…..

On Tuesday morning I scrolled through my list of artists/bands and when I saw Bobby Long’s name I realized something…..I missed his voice.

Not that he’s completely disappeared, he’s actively on twitter posting random things, his tour with Steve Winwood and even said his new cd was being mastered. I went through my entire Bobby collection starting with his VERY first CD (pre ATO), first CD with ATO – A Winter’s Tale, some live tracks from Daytrotter and finally last EP ‘Backing Singer’.

Then I remembered he tweeted a few new songs from his upcoming cd!!!!

Listen: Bobby Long – Something’s Gonna Get You

After listening to that track I realized I NEED some Bobby!! I need another crazy day at Leno, then a show afterwards. I miss gathering with friends and watch the man and his guitar take the stage.

I know he’ll be back to LA soon and I can’t wait!

I know I can’t be the only one that misses him……right?

Imagine Dragons – Radioactive

This video of Imagine Dragons performing Radioactive at SxSW has become very popular on my YouTube page. Its not the best video cause I was drunk and very close to the stage.

Enjoy!

Devestated I missed them at the Troubadour…..hey can’t get mad if they’re selling out shows!!!

JD McPherson – Northside Gal

On Friday morning I was listening to the Shell Zenner show on Amazing Radio and she played a song Northside Gal by JD McPherson. I just love the vibe of this song, I instantly envisioned bobby socks, poodle skirts and fitted collar shirts dancing around the local soda shop after school……hmmmm after that last comment I realized I watched way too many Happy Days reruns.

Enjoy!

A night with Little Red Lung

On Thursday night after a chaotic hour in LAX traffic I rushed to Silverlake just in time to catch Little Red Lung’s set at The Satellite.

And I’m happy to report it was great as I hoped it would be! LRL put on a kick ass show and since I’m a new fan I found myself enjoying new discovered songs. But I wasn’t the only one enamored with this band, it was great to see the crowd equally into the music and swayed along.

So did I squeal a little bit when they played 50 Fingers…. ? YES!! This is truly my favorite song on the EP!

Sadly I missed San Francesca, Seasons, & Dorian Wood but from what I heard they were great! I want to give a shout out to LA Underground for putting this all together!
