Matt Corby: Monday (audio video)

Its a known fact that Matt Corby has been the Musical Prince in my heart since I saw him perform at Sxsw in 2011.  Sadly, Matt been off the grid for more than a year….but if you thinkg about it…..he performed at nearly every festival in the UK & Australia, it’s no wonder why he needed a break. During that time he went back into writers mode….and released his new single ‘Monday‘.

And with new music = live shows!

That’s right Matt will be performing live in Australia, so check out his site for more date information!

Be sure to check out the new single on iTunes, YouTube and Spotify.

ode to thinking weekend

image

The long awaited third studio album of Bobby Long is finally here with the release date this Friday 8/7/15. I had the pleasure of getting to see him live times over the weekend.

The first was Friday night from the comfort of my own home on Concert Window – an amazing interactive website, where fans of the artist can chat while watching the performance and leave the artist tips. I think more artists should to look into this. It’s a great way to stay in touch with your fans. It was a great show. All around fun and great covers done by Bobby including an early 80’s Dolly Parton song, “Jolene”.

The second time was at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA. I have seen Bobby perform at several different places but I think this venue is my favorite place to see him. I am not sure if it’s that place hold so much music history or the fact that the walls are lined with beautiful instruments or the fact the acoustics are amazing. Whatever it is, Bobby is amazing there. If you are ever in LA when he is performing at McCabe’s, please be sure to get a ticket. You will not be disappointed. I also think the fact that NO CELLPHONES are allowed to be on during the performance helps.

The third and final performance was a special listening party at a private home in LA. It was here that I was able to record video a few songs and was also given my copy of the new “Ode to Thinking” CD that I pre-ordered from Bobby’s Pledge campaign.

So now down to what you all wanna know about the album and my thoughts on it. First off, I just wanna say I am so excited that this CD comes with a lyric book. It makes singing along a lot easier. There are 11 songs on the album but I am sad to report that one of my new favorites is NOT on the CD. However, I was told that will be a special vinyl edition that will be coming out on Record Store Day. That song is “Pretty Little Pennies” (even though I SWEAR he says “pretty little panties” but that is another story. LOL).

Bobby’s last album “Wishbone” was a bit more bluesy/rock sounding. With “Ode to Thinking”, you can tell that recording in Austin, TX played a part in how this album would sound. It has more a country blues sound to it. Reading the titles of each song might even depress you, but they are amazing. One of my favorite things about Bobby’s songwriting is the way he able to paint a picture with his words. He always seems to take you on a trip with his songs and that is what he does with “Ode to Thinking”. Whether it is with “cold hours of the morning with the wind in her hair” in the song “I’m Not Going Out Tonight” or “so open up the ventricle and close the bloody vestibule” in “Something Blue, Something Borrowed”, he gets you there. You feel what he is singing (even if I am not sure what that last one means. LOL).

Most of these songs, I have heard live before and they sound just as amazing on this CD, but by far, my favorite of the album is 1985. It is hauntingly beautiful and I love it. But don’t take my word for it – get yourself a copy when it come out this week tomorrow to be exact and if you have the time, you should check out Bobby while he is on tour promoting his new album. Music Monday: Menage

Usually I’m introduced to a band during live events and then I’ll search for their studio work (spotify and/or available CDs). The opposite effect has occurred when I first listened to Toronto based, Menage, Christmas song and then checked out their other music on Soundcloud. I was suddenly overwhelmed with their melodies and lyrics and at that moment I hoped they would come to the the LA area soon.

A few months later my wish was granted when they played a week in the SoCal area but of course availability was against me. Just when I thought my chances were over, I got a ticket for their very last show at the Hotel Cafe. I really could not contain my joy to finally Menage took the stage and it was magical!

I was so happy I was able to see them live because they put on one helluva show! I seriously love the way Bela and Fernando’s voices blend together and it makes me ache to hear more. And I have to say this….nicest people group of musicians!! It was great to see them talk to everyone who hung out afterwards. Finding a band who appreciates their fan base is harder than you realize. Those little moments go a long way with me. So if they’re playing in your area you have to check them out – you will not be disappointed.

Throwback Thursday: YSA – Wires In the Walls

I became familiar with the term ‘hiatus’ as a kid and all my favorite TV shows ended just as summer was starting. As an adult ‘Hiatus’ suddenly has 2 meanings: 1) really short to moderate break or 2) so long that its forgotten. Well, my favorite band and I do mean FAVORITE band Wires In the Walls officially announced their unspecified ‘hiatus‘.

ByeWires

So today I dedicate my Throwback Thursday to Wires In The Walls and relive some great memories by listening to their last full length album – New Symmetry. yes, I could wallow in fandom depression but I won’t! Nope I’m going to check out out the new various projects. I’ve already seen Beachwood Coyotes and think they’re awesome! So no matter what happens I know more great music will be created and this eases my Wires In the Walls ache.

Thanks Warren the Daves, Denton & Bryan (and Nick!) for partaking in some excellent nights.

Song Of The Day: One – Luxxe

LUXXEBAND

I just discovered “One” by Luxxe….and I can’t stop playing this song!!

Whenever the song is playing the thoughts of summer flows through my mind….it makes me anxious for the days I can blast this song, with the sunroof open (sorry I don’t do convertibles) and head to Santa Monica or Venice Beach to relax. Or maybe I’m cruising to Palm Springs for the weekend with friends…..either way this song = summertime fun!

Be sure to check out their Facebook page and follow them on Twitter!

Album Review: Little Red Lung – Beware

Little Red Lung - BEWARE

After seeing Little Red Lung play The Mint a few years ago, and as well as obsessively playing their self-titled EP religiously, it was inevitable they would become one of my all time favorite band.

When Zoe-Ruth Erwin (vocals), Ali Nikou (guitarist), Rob Hume (bassist) and John Broeckel (drums) come together, you instantly become aware they’re not your typical pop band. Each song has a certain flair that separates them from the masses and you realize not only are they talented musicians but true artists.

For the last few months Little Red Lung have been leaving hints of new music on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Each snippet would fill my musical heart with so much joy!

And now the wait is over.

To sum it mildly, ‘Beware‘ is simply captivating, soulful and hauntingly beautiful. Imagine the passion of Tori Amos with the mix of Florence Welch’s vocal range you have Zoe-Ruth Erwin. My biggest problem with Beware was trying to figure out my favorite song. Granted radio friendly songs like Porcupine Sheet and Get On The Boat were great but I wanted to find that song that spoke to me.

And then it hit me there was one song in particular I would play constantly…..Bell Tower.

And it was clear Bell Towers is the best song on the album. As a collective whole the band creates this majestic haunting sound that seems to elevate Zoe’s voice. And vocally this is the strongest song…..its powerful yet soft. Some singers would lose too much control and exaggerate certain notes. I find its Erwin’s control that takes you to the very edge but Zoe brings you back.

Its perfection.

The fourth song on the album, Dead Weight was originally my favorite followed by Civilian Tiger. This album has been on repeat while I work and when I get home to relax.

A new album means we get more live shows! I cannot wait to see Little Red Lung again because they put on a great show and I always leave with a smile on my face.

SxSW 2015 Recap: Circa Waves

As usual South by Southwest was filled with new bands to add to my play list but one band in particular, Circa Waves, caught my eye not only because they were really talented and have great songs but simply because at every time I saw them they had technical difficulties. Honestly, it should have turned me off but the complete opposite effect occurred.

The first time was at the British Music Embassy the Bass amp blew out and they had to end the show early and couldn’t play their new single T-Shirt Weather. So instead of moving on to the next band I was determined to hear this song!

Which leads me to the second time at the Dr. Martens showcase the bass went out half way through a song but was able to get it back and they continued on like champs. Yes, while standing under the giant tent trying to avoid the rain and not slide in the mud I officially became a fan!

And on the last night, while making plans my friends and I knew we had to end our SxSW Adventures with Circa Waves and see their last showcase at the #Uproxx house. Two songs into the set, the lead singer’s mic went out but don’t worry the guitarist mic was working perfectly and he just switched sides.

Despite all their issues Circa Waves played beautifully. I hope they come back to the US and everyone gets a chance to see how amazing these guys are. Their debut album, Young Chasers will be released on Tuesday, March 30th.

Circa Waves:

Kieran Shudall – Lead Singer

Sam Rourke – Bass

Joe Falconer – Guitarist

Colin Jones – Drummer
